Contemporary medieval music
Ensemble Spatium was born in 2021, to perform the musical suite “Jaume I, música de fets i llegendes”, a project on which Robert Santamaría had been working for 20 years. Five versatile musicians and a dancer bring this show to the stage in all its complexity, in which the elements of contemporary folk, medieval music, classical and world music, the variety of instruments from the East and West; as well as the contribution of historical and poetic texts, make of this concert a true initiatory journey to this exciting time of one of the key figures in the history of Catalonia.
Surely, in most of the great characters in the history of humanity, the real and the legendary aspects usually go together, and sometimes it is impossible to separate one from the other. Jaime I The Conqueror is no exception, and the chronicles about his life are full of both historical events and fabulous stories. This duality is what originally gave breath to the work, which is a personal vision, both in history and/or legend aspects as well as in musical style and production, of the life of this king.
The orchestra was formed from the members of a musical collective that has been exploring, in various stages and with different proposals, a whole range of musical styles for more than 30 years, from new age, electronic music, the “new music of the 90s”, world music, progressive rock, mediterranean folk music, to medieval-contemporary self-composed music.
